Referees: 4.18 Corona-Virus State Unemployment |
 | Referees: Update regarding Unemployment Benefits for Independent Contractors (Soccer Referees and other sports officials). Here is the link to the current Self-Employed/Independent Contractor Unemployment Instructions - https://esd.wa.gov/unemployment/self-employed - as of 8p Saturday April 18 their website is accepting applications from Independent Contractors.
Check out the link and READ all the information thoroughly prior to applying. There are several links with a video tutorial, a manual on how to apply and a check list of documents you will need. READ EVERYTHING thoroughly before you begin - phone a friend and ask them for help if needed.
One tip I can remind you about for sure is - DO NOT indicate any Referee Association as your employer - this will only delay your application and cause potential problems for you. Remember - you are a small business - as a referee you are an Independent Contractor which means you own your own small business which is why the government is allowing this unusual opportunity for self-employed/independent contractors to apply for unemployment benefits due to the virus and government shutdown of businesses.
Not everyone will qualify - from what we have read it appears you have to prove that you worked at least 680 hours (just over 450 90-minute matches) over the past 18 months or so as a referee with all the associations (HS, College, Youth) you work with to qualify. You will likely need your 2019 Tax Return with your Schedule C (1099 income). Depending on the number of games you have worked and what age groups will determine your hours worked. If you work another job I do not know if that will impact your qualifications either.
This is all new even to the state so you might find they dont have answers right away for your unique situation either - be patient with them :)
